Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), Aubrey Norton, has confirmed that he has filed a $10 million defamation lawsuit against Odessa Primus, a Member of Parliament representing the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN).

The legal action stems from allegations that Primus levelled against Norton to the effect that he accepted money from Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo.

Speaking at a press conference today, Norton made it clear that he intends to pursue the matter fully, describing the claims as a direct attack on his character and long-standing reputation in politics.

“I believe I’ll win the case and the money will go to charity. I’m not inclined to take money that I’m not so sure comes from the legal processes in Guyana. So, I would be inclined to let that go to charity and people in need.”

The PNCR Leader said that financial gain has never been his motivation for entering politics, noting that his career is based on service to Guyana.

“I was not lured into politics by money. I came into politics as a young man with a commitment to serve Guyana, and so, money was never a priority in my life and by that I mean accumulated wealth and going on. We need money to live…But if you decide you will damage my character by accusing me of taking money from the PPP and Bharrat Jagdeo, it’s a different ballgame. I spent my political life campaigning on my integrity, which I can say, is still intact.”

Maintaining that his record speaks for itself, Norton asserted that no credible individual can claim to have bribed him.

“No politician, no businessman can truthfully say they bribed me…It is an attempt and an attack on my integrity and I won’t allow it…The lawsuit will go ahead!” he declared.
