Two security guards attached to the Massy Supermarket in Providence, East Bank Demerara (EBD) were arrested last night for pointing a gun at the Minister within the Ministry of Natural Resources, Simona Broomes.

According to information received, the minister and her driver arrived in the supermarket’s compound sometime around 20:30 hrs. They were heading to the New Thriving Restaurant that is located above the supermarket.

The Guyana Standard was told that as the driver was about to park in the parking lot, two armed guards attached to the supermarket allegedly approached the minister’s vehicle and demanded that they leave the compound. An argument ensued between the security personnel, the minister and her driver. In the process, the minister alleged that the guard pulled a gun and aimed it at her.

The police were called in, the guards were arrested and later released on their own recognizance.

Reports are that the security guards informed the police that the minister’s vehicle was tinted and before they saw her, they thought that suspected robbers were inside. As such, they surrounded the vehicle and demanded that they leave the compound.

The Guyana Police Force said that a thorough investigation has been launched. In a statement, they said that the initial investigation revealed that both parties (the minister and the security guard in question) seemed to have been very aggressive.

The investigation will be completed and sent for advice.
