As the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) gets ready to host its 20th Biennial Delegates Congress, current Leader of the Party and President of Guyana, David Granger, will be walking in with an upper hand. He is likely to be unopposed for the top position.

The deadline for nominations has already expired, with nominations submitted for other top and central executive positions of the party. Party General Secretary, Amna Ally told reporters that so far Joseph Harmon, Volda Lawrence and Basil Williams were nominated for the post of Chairman – the second highest elected position – based on submissions from Regions One, Two, Nine and from the North American Region.

She said so far, no one has submitted nominations for the post of leader to challenge Granger. The seven nominees for Vice-Chairmanship are Volda Lawrence, George Norton, Joseph Harmon, Cosbert Roberts, Annette Ferguson, Winston Felix and James Bond.

Nominations closed at 2 pm this afternoon. The Returning Officer, Michael Somersaul and Assistant General Secretary, John Yates will check the eligibility of the nominees, and delegates attending the Congress in August, will have the chance to elect the officials.

The last biennial congress was held back in 2016 over a period of three days, as mandated by the Article 7.2 of the Party’s Constitution. Six hundred and twenty-five (625) Delegates and two hundred and seventy five (275) Observers from 140 groups were accredited.

Candidates who ran unopposed in 2016 were: Party Leader, David Granger; Party Chairman, Basil Williams; and Party Treasurer, Ronald Bulkan.
