The police are hunting for a man who brutally chopped his reputed wife because she wanted to have an abortion.

The incident happened on Sunday afternoon at Lima Dam, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

The victim has been identified as 22-year-old Vashti Mahase of Good Hope, ECD. She is currently hospitalized at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.

Divisional Commander, Calvin Brutus, has confirmed that police ranks are looking for a 36-year-old man, who is alleged to have carried out the attack.

According to information received, the victim and the suspect had been living together for the past six months. However, the relationship was said to be rocky most of the times with the 22-year-old woman wanting to leave on several occasions.

The victim’s mother, Zorina Mahase, said that when her daughter found out she was pregnant, she decided to have an abortion since she did not want to continue a relationship with the suspect and she also has two young children with her ex-husband.

The older Mahase said that when the suspect learnt that the 22-year-old was planning on having an abortion, he became enraged and threatened to kill her if she did not keep the child. The woman was forced to flee the home when the suspect went to work.

On Monday, the woman, accompanied by a rural constable, went to the suspect’s home to serve him a restraining order. It was there that the man went berserk and started chopping the victim on the road. The rural constable ran away.

The Guyana Standard was told that after the suspect attacked his reputed wife, he ran away. The woman was picked up and rushed to the hospital where she remains in a critical condition.

The suspect has not been arrested as yet.
