A truck that struck and killed a seven-year-old girl at Agricola, East Bank Demerara (EBD) about three hours ago is currently on fire.

Reports are that a group of angry villagers attacked the driver of the truck, who initially tried to escape, before handing him over to the police. They then set the truck ablaze. This has caused a buildup of traffic on the East Bank Demerara, making it difficult for fire tenders to get to the scene.

The little girl has been identified as Ciara Benjamin of Kitty, Georgetown. Her body has been taken to Georgetown Public Hospital where she was officially pronounced dead.

The Guyana Standard has been informed that the little girl was crossing the road with a relative when the truck driver overtook a vehicle and ended up crashing into her. One of the child’s feet was severed. Her body ended up under the truck. Her aunt was not injured.
