A taxi driver attached to the Green Ice Taxi Service was this morning remanded to prison after being charged with raping a 12-year-old girl.

Thirty-two-year-old Neville Thomas of Well Road, North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Courts.

It is alleged that between April 1, 2019 and April 30, 2019 at Diamond, East Bank, Demerara, he engage in sexual penetration with a child under the age of sixteen.

The unrepresented taxi driver was not required to plead to the indictable charge after it was read to him by the Magistrate.

The matter was held in-camera and members of the public and the media were asked to leave the courtroom.

According to information, the child is known to to taxi driver since he was hired to take her to and from school.

During the periods mentioned in the charge, Thomas picked up the child from school and took her to a hotel in Diamond and had sexual intercourse with her.

The child then returned home and confided to her parents as to what transpired and the matter was reported.

An investigation was carried out, hence Thomas was arrested and charged for the offence.

The court Prosecutor made serious objections to bail being granted to Thomas on the grounds of the serious nature of the allegation and the fact that the child trusted him.

The Magistrate, after listening to the facts, remanded Thomas to prison on the grounds that the child trusted him.

He was instructed to make his next court appearance on October 4.
