Corporal Lawrence Carmichael of the Mahaicony Police Station appeared before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court this morning to answer to the charge of causing death by dangerous driving.

He was not required to enter a plea and was subsequently slapped with bail to the tune of $1.5M. The matter has been deferred to March 10 for written submissions as it relates to the Administration of Justice Act being applied to charge.

Guyana Standard previously reported that Carmichael was driving the force’s vehicle in pursuit of a young driver that led to a multivehicular smash-up on February 2022 at Mahaica, East Coast Demerara.

Christopher Bhagwandat, 20, and his 16-year-old girlfriend Shereeda Persaud were both killed during the chase. According to previous police reports, Bhagwandat was asked to stop by traffic ranks along the Perseverance Public Road, Mahaicony, but he drove away.
