The parent who allegedly attacked a St. Angela’s Primary School teacher has taken to social media to tell her side of the story. The woman is claiming that her son was struck with a ruler which left him with injuries on his hands.

The parent, with the social media handle, @latoya, took to Facebook and was unapologetic about the incident. In fact, the woman claimed that her son returned home with a splinter in his hands. She said when she inquired about the incident, the lad informed her that he was hit by the teacher.

One of several posts the mother made about the incident

In the post, the woman said she visited the school to inquire more about the incident. The woman claimed that she met with an unpleasant reception from the teacher.

“I requested an apology from her to my son and me and she refused. She came to work after 10 am and as soon as she saw me is a cut eye and sucked teeth and y’all telling me that I shouldn’t do what?” The mother said.

The woman further claimed that before the two had a scuffle, the teacher made threats, which made her furious. She said, “I was walking away and she told me how she is going to catch me on the road and beat me. Today was not the day fah beat me because I wasn’t having it,” the woman said.

She noted that prior to their altercation, the Principal of the school apologized for the incident and promised that the teacher would have been dealt with. “She said the teacher was wrong but she has to teach her class today…. the HM pleaded with me not to go to the station nor to the ministry,” the woman said.

The Guyana Teachers Union and the Ministry of Education has since condemned the incident in separate statements. GTU President Mark Lyte said, “This is becoming too frequent, where teachers are being assaulted by parents and guardians, and it is something that has to be addressed forthwith. So, we are going to continue to make the call to the Ministry to take decisive action.”

Chief Education Officer Saddam Hussein was also quoted saying, “When parents or guardians are engaged in violent acts against teachers, it goes against established values, norms, and expectations. We cannot beat teachers and then ask them to teach our children peaceful conflict resolutions.”
