Persons who were unable to complete their secondary education now have a chance to secure their qualifications and pursue degree programmes under the government’s Get Ready for Opportunities to Work (GROW) initiative.

Applications for the programme opened on Monday and will provide resident Guyanese who are 18 years or older, and who were unable to complete their secondary education, with the opportunity to earn a General Educational Development (GED) or Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) certificate. Both certificates will aid in qualifying these persons for better jobs and pursuing higher education.

In a notice issued by the Guyana Academy of Learning (GOAL), highlighting its scholarship programmes for 2023, it was stated that “completing either one successfully will allow the student to matriculate to a three- or four-years bachelor’s degree programme.”

The SCOF Level 6 Diploma programme has a duration of six months and requires the applicant to have completed at least up to grade nine. If the applicant would have written the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations but did not pass five subjects he/she is also eligible.

The GED programme also has a duration of six months but is strictly for applicants who have written their CSEC examinations but did not pass at least five subjects.

Applications were also opened on Monday for the GOAL Undergraduate programmes and persons can choose from 90 different areas of study being offered by the governments’ accredited educational partners across the globe. It was also noted that applications close on April 20, 2023 after which, an evaluation process will take place to determine this year’s awardees.

The government’s GOAL initiative was first launched in 2021, as part of its “transformative agenda” to have an educated workforce, with an aim to deliver 20,000 scholarships by 2025. It provides a variety of educational opportunities ranging from certificates, diplomas, bachelors, postgraduate, masters, and doctorate programmes.
