Businessman Robert Bostwick is a first time candidate in the upcoming Local Government Elections (LGE). But, despite going up against the two major political parties in a Central Georgetown district, Bostwick believes that the time is now for a new vision and new blood to sit at the helm of Constituency 7 which covers the Bourda, Lacytown and Stabroek districts.

In an exclusive interview with Guyana Standard, Bostwick explained that his decision to run for a council seat was due to the number of issues that his constituency constantly faces, including crime and vagrancy. He said these matters are often overlooked by the current representatives. According to him, the change must first start with engagement with residents to understand the problems they face.

“I don’t even know who is representing Constituency 7 currently. I don’t see or hear from them, not even during Local Government Elections time. The thing that baffles me is how you can run for an office and your Constituency does not know who you are. I plan on being different. I want to be visible and make representation that matters at the level of council,” Bostwick said.

The candidate also noted that currently, there is an issue of crime that is plaguing many residents. He implored that while the police can only do so much, there is a need for a community watch group, which he said could help the police as well to apprehend criminal elements.

“What we know is that many of these crimes are being committed by persons living outside these communities. I plan on formulating a strategy that will involve everyone. What we hope to do is make sure these criminal elements know that it is not business as usual,” Bostwick said.

As it pertains to vagrancy, he noted that the issue has always been overlooked. He suggested that a collective approach be taken at the level of the council to understand the circumstances that lead to this and what corrective actions could be deployed.

When asked about his chances of being victorious, Bostwick said, “I am confident. I’ve already met with residents and I’ve pitched my plan to make sure that they are represented at the level of the council. Even if I don’t win, the work will continue because I genuinely want to see changes within Constituency 7.”
