The woman who was found dead in an East Coast hotel faced years of abuse at the hands of her killer. This was confirmed by the sister of the deceased woman. Forty six year-old Kim Haley was stabbed a total of 13 times at the Alpha Hotel by her husband. He also slashed her throat.
Haley’s sister, Gail Harris told Guyana Standard that her sibling finally found the courage to leave her husband about a month ago, after facing several forms of domestic violence.
Harris explained that her sister had moved from their Mahaicony home to Georgetown where she was adjusting to her new life, away from her husband. Harris further noted that while the rest of the family was aware of the husband’s abusive ways, her sister was encouraged many times to leave him be.
Harris however is not certain how her sister ended up in the hotel with her abusive husband. “I was expecting to see her today (May 4, 2023) because she called me today (May 4, 2023) and told me we were going to meet up. When I saw the phone rang, I thought it was her finally calling but then I was told that she was found murdered. I came here (at Alpha Hotel) immediately and saw her body laying there with so many stab wounds, her throat slit, it’s like I have no words,” Harris said.
She continued, “She called me one day and told me ‘my sister, I am going to leave him because I can’t take it any more and I don’t want it to get worse.’ I don’t know how she ended up here with him and he did this. It’s like I can’t even begin to process this.”
Police said yesterday that the husband surrendered and confessed to committing the gruesome act.
Hotel staff recounted that the woman’s body was discovered after her husband checked out of the room. The couple reportedly arrived at the hotel at 13:30 hrs and checked in at the hotel around 13:45 hrs. Persons on the same floor in different rooms recounted hearing screams from the room.
