In response to recent messages circulating within communities, concerns have been raised regarding Guyana’s security, Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips, urged that there be no panic while emphasizing reliance on official sources information.

“The Government of Guyana appreciates the vigilance and concerns of its citizens but urges all Guyanese to remain composed and informed through the official channels,” stated Prime Minister Phillips. He acknowledged the potential for fear and anxiety generated by unofficial messages and reassured citizens that efforts are underway to safeguard their interests.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to ensuring the nation’s security, the Prime Minister called for calm and rationality during this period of heightened attention. His call to use official sources for information seeks to underscore the government’s dedication to transparency and reliability.

He said as Guyana prepares for the upcoming December 3rd referendum, the government seeks to quell concerns and maintain a sense of order among its citizens, reinforcing the importance of accurate and verified information in shaping a well-informed public opinion.

In parallel with addressing domestic concerns, Guyana’s Head of State, Dr. Irfaan Ali, is currently leading delegation at the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Taking place in Expo City, Dubai, from November 30 to December 12, 2023, the President aims to advocate for the inclusion of forest conservation measures in the global strategy to achieve net zero by 2050.

President Ali is expected to return on tomorrow, Friday, December 1, coinciding with a pivotal moment for Guyana, as the International Court of Justice is anticipated to rule on the nation’s request for protective measures against Venezuela’s December 3 Referendum.

This alignment of events underscores the multifaceted challenges and responsibilities faced by Guyana on both the international climate action stage and in safeguarding its interests within the region.
