The real moment at Sunday’s World Press Freedom Day 2026 luncheon wasn’t just in the speeches. It was in the recognition of two names that have shaped Guyana’s media space for decades.

At the Pegasus Hotel, veteran broadcaster Francis Quamina Farrier and media professional Shanta Gobardhan were presented with Lifetime Achievement Awards, a nod to years of steady, often behind-the-scenes work that helped define standards in the industry.

Farrier’s name is one many Guyanese and Caribbean audiences grew up hearing. His voice, style and storytelling became part of the region’s broadcast identity. Though he was unable to attend the ceremony, the recognition still carried weight, reflecting a career that stretched across borders and generations.

Gobardhan, over the years, has built a reputation for consistency and professionalism. In a media environment now dominated by speed and constant updates, her discipline stands out even more.

Their recognition came as Prime Minister Mark Phillips reaffirmed the government’s commitment to press freedom.
