While it is well known that Guyana contributes significantly to the oxygen that the world breathes, and boasts one of the most sustainable forest management systems, if not in this hemisphere, in the world, it is a reputation that the government intends to maintain with several projects that it plans to bring onstream by 2025. Making this statement today was Minister of Natural Resources, Vickram Bharrat.
He was at the time, delivering remarks at an event held to commemorate World Environment Day 2021. The Minister said the government will be bringing several projects onboard to ensure Guyana maintains its carbon sink status.
Towards this end, the Minister reminded of the government’s plans to bring the gas-to-shore project onboard. The Minister said the project will change the landscape of the country while simultaneously reducing the carbon emissions released from the use of heavy fuel oil.
“By bringing gas to shore and having more reliable, cleaner and cheaper electricity, that by itself, as a single project, stands to transform our country and also, it will provide incentives for us to venture into other cleaner and renewable energy sources,” expressed Bharrat.
The official said the Amaila Falls Hydro Project is another massive project that will contribute significantly to the environment as well as to the economy. Bharrat reminded that the PPP/C administration had started post-2015 to work on the Amaila Project while noting that this will be back on the table as previously mentioned by President Irfaan Ali and Vice President, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo. He said that it is poised to be of significant value to the energy mix envisioned by his party.
He reminded as well that the government has already started solar farms in many parts of the country such as Essequibo and Region 10. He said similar work will be done in the Hinterland too.
“So, the Government, with these projects, is working towards ensuring that we maintain our carbon sink status,” the Minister concluded.
