Building a modern country where people can flourish is as equally important as reinforcing the values and pride that people have in themselves and their fellow citizens. This is what the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) is passionate about.
As the party seeks reelection, its General Secretary and the country’s Vice-President, Bharrat Jagdeo says more focus will be placed on fostering values.
Confident about a return to office, Jagdeo said that the government will push cultural policy to promote national values, and focus heavily on civic education.
“So, we cannot just promote the national identity that will bring people together, the Guyanese identity, but also resolve some of the issues that we have with selfishness and maybe, maybe the callous behavior, where someone can just drive along the highway and just take three food boxes and wind down the window and throw it out onto the road,” he said.
Jagdeo also commented on the infamous video that was circulated during the unrest several months ago, where a young man was taped beating homeless people in the street while laughing.
“We failed him as a youngster. The one who is laughing actually. I believe we failed him…If we had done better in creating a value system, where you can respect life and property and everything else, then maybe he would have taken a different route… So that kind of value system is very important,” the GS noted.
