A 30-year-old Leopold Street resident who is accused of breaking into a woman’s car and carting off with $550,000 in cash and other articles, was moments ago sentenced to two years imprisonment for the offence.

The sentence was handed down to Albert DeFreitas who was on trial before Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Courts.

This morning when the matter was called, Magistrate McGusty said that she found sufficient evidence against DeFreitas, hence she handed down the custodial sentence.

It is alleged that DeFreitas, on January 31, 2018 at Parade Street, stole a quantity of articles and cash valuing $550,000 property of Sherry Haynes.

He had pleaded not guilty to the charge on his first court appearance before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman.

According to information, the woman left her car parked on Parade Street and went into a store.

However, on her return, she discovered the items missing and upon further investigation, it was observed that the lock of one of the doors was tampered with.

The matter was then reported and police, on investigating, saw DeFreitas on surveillance camera committing the crime. Hence, he was arrested and charged for the offence.
