The main suspect in the Christmas Eve murder of two gold miners, at Nassano Backdam, North West District, was today charged and remanded.

50-year-old Kurtland Damon called ‘Cartoe’, was remanded by Magistrate Dylon Bess at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

He was charged with the murders of Sherwin Goddette, 29, a gold miner of Dredge Creek in the Upper Pomeroon, and his nephew, Shawn France, 21, a gold miner from Akawini Creek, Pomeroon.

The killing occurred at Nassano Backdam, North West District.

Damon was represented by attorney-at-law Latchmie Rahamat. The matter has been adjourned until February 15.

Police Prosecutor Bridgemohan told the court that the accused was accompanied by his attorney at the Criminal Investigation Department on January 7 after a wanted bulletin was issued for him. Thomas Kyte also surrendered for his involvement in the attack.

The accused and the deceased allegedly had an altercation at a shop while they were imbibing. Later when the deceased were going home, they were allegedly attacked by Damon and Kyte.

The police issued wanted bulletins for the two suspects, Damon and Kyte on Tuesday last, several days after the incident occurred. The men later surrendered in the company of their attorneys. Kyte surrendered on Thursday at the Matthews Ridge Police Station.
