The Head of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU), James Singh, disclosed that recent threats against him are connected to a suspected Venezuelan-based criminal group.
Singh shared this information with reporters on Wednesday at an event at the Guyana Marriott Hotel. He said that the agency continues to collaborate with international counterparts to address the issue, as the threats originated from outside Guyana.
Singh explained that, based on gathered intelligence, the Venezuelan group known as VIGOD, is believed to be behind the threats. “VIGOD is a Spanish group we suspect out of Venezuela, and we are working with our counterparts,” he stated.
“Unfortunately, we don’t have the sort of communication we’d want with Venezuela as we have with other countries,” he said.
Singh mentioned that efforts are ongoing to share information with regional counterparts in an effort to uncover the truth and dissuade the group.
Singh’s concerns about threats against his safety are not new. Three months ago, a masked gunman issued death threats against him.
